Wallwasher - general

The wallwasher is sometimes known as the control unit. It takes the signal from the PC and converts it into the three LED displays on the wallwasher, and the LED displays on the two sidelights. The wallwasher also drives the fans and rumbler when fitted, and connects the input / output connections for the speakerlights.

The lights work on a similar (but not exact) principle to the sidelights and some of the faults that apply to the sidelight apply to the wallwasher lights as well. Two main differences are that the LEDs on the wallwasher are the normal PCB through-hole mounting type and there are twelve LEDs of each colour instead of eight. See the Components page for suggested replacement LEDs.

Current drawn by the wallwasher

The current drawn from the power supply (at 18v) by the wallwasher varies according to what accessories are connected, the light colour, the light brightness, etc. The current can vary from unit to unit and accessory / light to accessory / light. For example, full red on one sidelight used 84mA, whilst another sidelight used 100mA.

Other than when on standby, the readings were taken with the wallwasher on all the time.

The wrist rumbler starts off at 150mA and drops to 92mA, then back to 150mA, then drops to 92mA, repeating the same cycle.

The colour readings were taken with the light at maximum brightness and the reading was the lowest reading for each colour as it went round the spectrum. The lowest point was normally in the centre of that colour. For red, green and blue, that meant that there was only the one colour that was lit. For magenta, cyan and yellow, it was when the two colours that make up that colour (e.g. blue and red for magenta), were at equal brightness.

Connections on the wallwasher

- see the relevant pages for more information

Do not force the plugs into the sockets - the pins can be easily damaged

Wrist rumbler connection - 8-pin mini-din plug

Fan connection - 5-pin mini-din plug. A modified 6-pin mini-din plug can be used instead

Audio in - 7-pin mini-din plug. It’s unlikely that you’ll find these plugs / sockets. An 8-pin mini-din plug can be used instead without any modification

PSU in - EIAJ-05 type - see the Power supply page

Sidelight connector - 15-pin VGA connector

USB - USB2 B connector
